Flea market at Toji

On the twenty-first of every month, Toji temple hosts one of the best-known flea market in Kyoto. This flea market is so famous it even has a nickname, "Kobo-san," named after the Buddhist monk, Kobo Taishi who started the Kobo sect of Buddhism.

A throng of shoppers and more than 500 vendors crowd into the temple grounds selling almost anything you can imagine: food, bonsai, crafts, antiques, and even kimono.

This is a historical bazaar which even the older residents of Kyoto have grown up with. As such, it's a great sightseeing spot if you're looking to gain a better understanding of Kyoto.

To get to Toji temple, get off Kintetsu line at Toji station and just follow the crowds.
